Library and Archives Canada (Fig. 1) is chock full of online exhibits and databases (Fig. 2) of immediate use to family historians. Primary among them is of course access to images of the once every ten year census starting in 1851. But important as that kind of data is to genealogists, it is only a fraction the online offerings which include significant immigration, First Nations, Military, and “Genealogy and Family History” sections.
Census and Directories
As noted, the census collection runs every 10 years from 1851 to 1911 but also includes a 1906 and 1916 census of the Prairie Provinces since they were growing so fast. This full set of records is only searchable by geographic locations and though it is a bit cumbersome there are research aids to help narrow down the actual census districts throughout the country. This means that each page of the census for a district may need to be scanned in order to find the family you are looking for. In a world where we expect an instant response to a surname query it can be annoying. However the work required to carefully locate the geography of the family and the context of people living around them most often provides so much more information that the work is well repaid.
